WHITEY SOMERS

There are musicians who discover music, and there are musicians who seem to spend their whole lives finding their way back to it.

Whitey Somers is one of the latter.

A guitarist, singer, songwriter and recording artist, Whitey is now entering his 50th year as a professional songwriter and artist. He began performing at 16, and the road has since taken him through Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia before eventually bringing him to Shaunavon, Saskatchewan.

Along the way came clubs, festivals, recording studios, long drives, changing bands, setbacks, unexpected opportunities—and a lifetime of stories.

Those stories became the music.

Coming from a musical family, Whitey is the nephew of Juno Award-winning Canadian composer Harry Somers. But his own musical path has always been his own. His songs are shaped by the places he's lived, the people he's met, the experiences he's carried, and the ordinary moments that become something more when put into words and melody.

At the heart of it all is songwriting.

Whitey's music reflects life through Canadian eyes—sometimes funny, sometimes gritty, sometimes reflective and sometimes downright funky. Blues runs deep, but his music reaches across roots, rock, country, jazz, funk and everything in between.

Original Roots, Blues & Other Grooves.

His recorded work includes YTCD, Happy Guy, Down That Road and The Call of the Blues. His songwriting has earned international recognition, including a Canadian Songwriting Competition shortlist, Unsigned Only recognition and a third-place finish for “A Free Man” in the 2025 International Songwriters Day Song Contest.

But through all of it, Whitey kept going.

In 2025, he won Saskatoon's Road to Memphis Challenge, earning the opportunity to represent the Saskatoon Blues Society at the 41st International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee.

In January 2026, he stood on Beale Street and performed his original songs in the home of the blues. He didn't make the finals, but he returned with something equally important—the experience of having shared his music on one of the world's most important blues stages.

Then came another milestone.

His song “Gone” was featured in the 2026 feature film The Killer Balloon: 'Til Death Do Us Part, while his music continued reaching audiences beyond Canada.

And at the 2026 International Singer-Songwriters Association Awards, Whitey received Silver — International Male Songwriter of the Year.

For him, that recognition represents more than a trophy.

It recognizes the thing that has been at the centre of his journey all along:

the songs.

The guitar may be what people notice first. The voice carries the words. The grooves get people moving.

But underneath it all is the songwriter—the guy who has spent a lifetime collecting experiences and turning them into music.

Over 5 decades of performing, recording and writing, Whitey is entering his 50th year still doing what he has always done:

writing songs, playing music and telling stories.

Ontario. Alberta. British Columbia. Saskatchewan. Memphis.

The road has become part of the music.

Maybe that's why Down That Road is such a fitting title.

There have been detours. Hard miles. Unexpected turns. But he kept walking.

He kept playing.

He kept writing.

And somewhere along the way, the songs began telling the story for him.

Whitey Somers isn't simply a musician who has spent a lifetime on the road.

He's a songwriter who has spent a lifetime turning the road into songs.

50 years in—and the story isn't over yet.
